Book Blogger Confessions #10 (5.21.12)

Book Blogger Confessions is a new blog meme hosted by Tiger of All Consuming Books and Karen of For What It's Worth. The meme will run on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of every month  to discuss some of the frustrations that are unique to book bloggers.

You can read the introductory post here.

Here's this week's question:

Memes. Love em or hate em? How many do you participate in? Which kinds do you like best? Do you feel like there are too many?

I happen to enjoy participating in memes. Right now I participate in four pretty regularly.
  • Stacking the Shelves hosted by Tynga's Reviews on Sundays. I used to do In My Mailbox and recently started doing this one. I like keeping track of the books I get in and seeing what everyone else has acquired each week. Plus, for the books I get, I like to put down some initial thoughts about why I want to read the book.
  • It's Monday...What Are You Reading? hosted by BookJourney on Mondays. I love doing this each Monday - it helps keep me organized. I know what reviews I still have to get to , what books I need to read for upcoming blog tours/review dates, etc. I also like visiting the other participants to see what they are readings.
  • Book Blogger Confessions hosted by All Consuming Books and For What It's Worth on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month. I love this one...the topics that these two bloggers come up with each time are great for discussions and I love seeing what everyone else thinks about the topic.
  • Book Beginnings Friday hosted by Rose City Reader on Fridays. This one I just started doing and I enjoy it. It's fun to see the first sentence of each of the books everyone is reading and to see what people think of it.

I do each of these for different reasons but I find that overall, the one common reason for doing these is to visit and find new blogs out there that are either just starting out or that have been there for a while but I just haven't come across them yet.

When I first started blogging, I admit that I did a ton of memes - one almost every day. I liked doing them and it was a great way to get into the blogging world and let people find me. Then it became too much and I cut down on them. Over the 2+ years of blogging, I have changed the memes that I do, but now I am pretty happy with the 4 I do.

Are there a lot of memes out there? Yes, but I think that's good if for no other reason than you have the ability to do ones that interest you. The ones I do I feel either lead to some type of discussion or I use them as an organizational tool.

What about you? What are your thoughts on memes? Do you participate in any and if so, which ones?

  1. I agree with you. I so the same ones you do but also add Teaser Tuesday. I use TT and BB to add a bit more spotlight to books that I will be reviewing on Thursdays and Saturdays.

    1. I've done Teaser Tuesday in the past but then found that I didn't always have time to visit the other blogs also participating.

I like Book Beginnings for the same reason - that it spotlights one book and I can give some of myy thoughts about it.

    1. I find they are fun and help motivate me to visit the other blogs participating in those memes.

  3. I think memes are great for new bloggers while they find their voice and get established.
They are a great way to meet the community and connect.
My only problem is a blog hosting daily memes (and nothing else) that require little more than posting a cover. There's nothing wrong with that - I've done it myself but 5-7 days of cover promotion only will turn me off to a blog.
I'm glad to hear that you enjoy this meme. Feel free to suggest topics!

    1. I agree - I think when I first started out, doing a bunch of memes helped get used to the blogging world and find others blogs that shared my reading interests. Now I am choosy about the ones I do, plus I want to make sure I have time to visit the other blogs participating. I also want to make sure I have time for reviews - the main purpose of my blog!

  4. I've never done any of the memes you mention (memtion) here. There are quite a few memes for book bloggers to enjoy! I have a Memes page which features numerous memes for book bloggers. :)

  5. I would like to participate in several memes, but I do not have currently enough time to do so. The only one I try to participate, and I cannot do every week, is Friday Finds, hosted by shouldbereading.wordpress.com, where I basically post the last 5 books added to my Goodreads TBR during the week, fiction and non-fiction.

And of course, my own meme: "I love France", where I review books related to France, or lately share something about my recent trip there.
go have a look if you are not familiar with it, and feel free to use it for anything French, it can even be about French food, etc. My latest post is: http://wordsandpeace.com/2012/05/17/i-love-france-18-shakespeare-and-company/

    1. If I know I am not going to be able to set aside some time to visit the other blogs also participating in the meme, I don't do it that week. I feel that if I am going to add my link to a meme, I should at least visit some of the others also doing it.

I'll have to check out your "I Love France" meme - although I don't usually have too much related to France on my blog.

  6. I did the same thing when I first started blogging... I did a bunch of memes, partly because I didn't think anyone would know who I was if I didn't do meme. I also thought it was cool to be a part of the community in that way. I think everyone just needs to find what works for them.

You have some memes I haven't heard of yet... I'm eager to take a look at them later when I have a bit more time.

    Have a nice week!!

    1. I found it was a great way to see what other blogs were out there and to see the different styles. Plus, it does get my blog out there for others to find!

  7. I've been tempted to try "It's Monday...What Are You Reading?" myself. :-) It sounds like a helpful meme. I'm also glad that Tynga and others are providing alternatives to IMM now--I'm not mad at the blog that originated IMM, but I'd just rather not visit it at the present, all things considered.

So glad to have you doing BBC with us!

    1. I find It's Monday to be so helpful - I like to know what I have do reading-wise and review-wise and this puts it all together!

Thanks for coming up with the idea for BBC - I love it!
