Review: Regretting You by Colleen Hoover

Title: Regretting You
Author: Colleen Hoover
Published: December 2019, Montlake Romance
Format: ARC E-copy, 365 pages
Source: Netgalley via Publisher

Summary:
From #1 New York Times bestselling author of It Ends with Us comes a poignant novel about family, first love, grief, and betrayal that will touch the hearts of both mothers and daughters.

Morgan Grant and her sixteen-year-old daughter, Clara, would like nothing more than to be nothing alike.

Morgan is determined to prevent her daughter from making the same mistakes she did. By getting pregnant and married way too young, Morgan put her own dreams on hold. Clara doesn’t want to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Her predictable mother doesn’t have a spontaneous bone in her body.

With warring personalities and conflicting goals, Morgan and Clara find it increasingly difficult to coexist. The only person who can bring peace to the household is Chris—Morgan’s husband, Clara’s father, and the family anchor. But that peace is shattered when Chris is involved in a tragic and questionable accident. The heartbreaking and long-lasting consequences will reach far beyond just Morgan and Clara.

While struggling to rebuild everything that crashed around them, Morgan finds comfort in the last person she expects to, and Clara turns to the one boy she’s been forbidden to see. With each passing day, new secrets, resentment, and misunderstandings make mother and daughter fall further apart. So far apart, it might be impossible for them to ever fall back together.

My thoughts: I still consider myself to be a newbie to the Colleen Hoover fan club, having only read three of her books, but having absolutely loved those three. I do know that when I pick up one of her books, I am probably going to be gutted, emotionally wrecked and doing some ugly crying at least once or twice...and I am totally fine with that. I think it's great that she has that ability to make you feel so deeply in a book and believe me, this book is no exception!

As soon as I started this book, I was immediately hooked. I love that this author has such a way of creating her characters that you are so attached to them. You feel this connection to them where you almost bond with them and can not stop thinking of them. This is absolutely a binge-worthy type of read where you will not want to do anything but keep reading, despite the fact that you will be utterly devastated a time or two - keep those tissues handy!

The emotions that Colleen Hoover is able to evoke out of a book is nothing short of a miracle. She deals with grief and how we all handle it differently. She deals with the mother-daughter relationship so beautifully and so true. I have a good relationship with my mom and I've always had one, but I could see in Morgan and Clara's relationship the strain and the tension and it felt so real...there wasn't anything about this relationship that felt untrue at any point. And the biggest takeaway from this is that communication is really the key to any good relationship!

This book just might be my new favorite of the ones I've read so far from Colleen Hoover. I do plan at some point to go back read her other books but she is definitely a must read for me as I know I can count on her to deliver a unique, character driven story that will steal your heart. Definitely put this one on your list if it isn't already on it...it's absolutely worth the read!
