Review: Eggs in Purgatory by Laura Childs

First line: Suzanne Dietz didn't set out to start the Cackleberry Club, the whole thing just sort of happened.

From the back cover: Suzanne, Toni, and Petra lost their husbands but found independence - and, in each other, a life raft of support, inspiration, fresh baked goods, and their own business. But when the Cackleberry Club cafe opened its doors in the town of Kindred, who'd have guessed that the cozy oasis would become the scene of a crime?

Suzanne's lawyer is found in his car behind the Cackleberry with egg on his face and blood on the dash. Suzanne's taking the crime personally: The murder reveals a scandal in her late husband's past and brings a stranger fleeing a messianic sect to her for help. Now, discovering the link between a dead man with secrets and a runaway cultist may be putting Suzanne's own life on the line.

My thoughts: This is the first in Laura Child's Cackleberry Club Mysteries. I have read all her Tea Shop Mysteries and some of her Scrapbooking Mysteries and love both series. This one I am not sure I will continue to read. I felt there were too many things going on in the story and because it was set in a non-descript small town, it seemed to lack the charm that adds to the story in the other series. Overall, it was an okay book, not the best but certainly not the worst I've read.

  1. I love this series! I've read both of them now. Laura Childs is from my neck of the woods.

Oh and I love your Books read list. You have read some really good ones. We have the same tastes!

  2. I haven't read ANY of Laura Childs books. That could be considered a crime :) I need to fix this oversight. Nice review!

  3. I haven't read any of her books but I just read your review on one of the Tea Shop mysteries and it sounded really good. This one seemed a little less gripping to me. Not sure if I'll pick this one up. Thanks for the honest review though.
