In the hushed aftermath of a total eclipse, Laura witnesses a brutal attack. She and her boyfriend Kit call the police, and in that moment, it is not only the victim's life that is changed forever. Fifteen years on, Laura and Kit live in fear, and while Laura knows she was right to speak out, the events that follow have taught her that you can never see the whole picture: something, and someone, is always in the dark.

My thoughts: This is one of those books that as soon as I heard about it, I knew I had to read it, but it's also one of those books that the less you know about it going in, the better your reading experience will be. For that reason, I am going to purposely be as vague as I can while trying to explain what I loved about this book.

First, I will say right upfront - this is not an action-based mystery-thriller. It's more a character-based, atmospheric read. And to pair the story with the solar eclipse - just brilliant! And as an aside, I'm super excited for the solar eclipse in August - I hope we're able to see it here in NY!

When I first picked this book up, I almost thought I wasn't going to be able to finish it - it's a slow start...really slow, but after about fifty pages, I was hooked and then I couldn't put it down! I devoured the rest of the book in a day and a half - I just couldn't get enough of this story. And again - it's not the action driving this story, it's the characters and the way the story is told. It moves back and forth in time and is told from two perspectivies - Laura and Kit. These two characters, along with some others that you meet get under your skin. They are complex, complicated and deeply flawed.

This story is anything but straight-forward and that's what I loved most. Just when you think you have things figured out, think again! Even when it comes to the characters...nothing is as it seems. Just how far would you go to make someone believe your side of the story?

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this, especially when I wasn't even sure I was going to finish it, and now it just might be one of my top reads of the year. So many intricate twists and clever threads coming together - just a brilliantly written book!
