Review: The First Mistake by Sandie Jones

Title: The First Mistake
Author: Sandie Jones
Published: June 2019, Minotaur Books
Format: ARC Paperback, 304 pages

From Sandie Jones, the author of the Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick and New York Times bestseller The Other Woman, comes an addictively readable new domestic suspense about a wife, her husband, and the woman who is supposedly her best friend.

THE WIFE: For Alice, life has never been better. With her second husband, she has a successful business, two children, and a beautiful house.

HER HUSBAND: Alice knows that life could have been different if her first husband had lived, but Nathan’s arrival into her life gave her back the happiness she craved.

HER BEST FRIEND: Through the ups and downs of life, from celebratory nights out to comforting each other through loss, Alice knows that with her best friend Beth by her side, they can survive anything together. So when Nathan starts acting strangely, Alice turns to Beth for help. But soon, Alice begins to wonder whether her trust has been misplaced . . .

The first mistake could be her last.

My thoughts: Last year I read, and loved, Sandie Jones's debut novel, The Other Woman, so of course, I was super jazzed when I received a copy of her sophomore novel, The First Mistake...and let me tell you...it's every bit as good as the first one, if not better.

This book is such a fun, twisty ride, with just that hint of darker tones than Sandie's previous book. I loved everything about this book - from the way it was told in three parts to the characters that I didn't necessarily love, but kept me glued to the pages. This book hooks you right from the start and never really lets up. There are these whiplash moments that really pull you in. I had so many different theories about what was going on but never once did I guess where this book would end up...not at all!!! You may think you know how this story is going to go, but think again!!!!

The characters in this book are really well developed. And while you may or may not like them, they do get under your skin. I was a bit ambivalent about Alice and Beth, going back and forth about how I felt about them, but ultimately, I did feel for each of them in the end. One thing I did note and appreciated was how well their emotions were developed - this really grabbed me at times, making me a bit more sympathetic to what they were going through.

Sandie Jones has definitely mastered the psychological suspense/domestic thriller. This is one addictive, binge-worthy read that will be perfect for your summer reading and I highly recommend picking this one up!!!

  1. Yes please! This sounds so good and I like how dark and twisty it sounds. I haven't read her first book either but I think I need to read both!
